Fumagilin-B, based on a natural extract produced by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, is a treatment for the control and prevention of both Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae in honey bees. Fumagilin-B’s highly specific action gives high efficacy against Nosema disease and can improve winter survival of honey bee colonies.
Nosema is a disease caused by a single cell parasite. Historically, there was one type (Nosema apis) that caused diarrhea in bees that were under stress, typically after long winter confinement with no cleansing flights. Treatment and prevention involved feeding of Fumagillin B in the Spring and Fall. Another type, Nosema ceranae, is also prevalent now and can be involved in the deaths of some honeybee colonies. Unlike Nosema apis, N. ceranae does not cause diarrhea. Diagnosis requires microscopic examination to determine Nosema spore counts. Fumagillin B treatment reduces the spore counts and effects of both types of Nosema.

Refer to product label for detailed directions. Fumagilin powder is mixed into sugar syrup in the spring at least four weeks prior to the main honey flow. In the fall, it is fed after all honey supers have been removed. Mix 454 g bottle with 100 gallons of sugar syrup. This mixture will treat 100 hives in the Spring or 50 hives in the Fall.
Note: Yellow spots in the snow on warm early spring days are often caused by normal cleansing flights and do not indicate a Nosema infection.
